Hunt Groom

Part Time | Accommodation Available | Flexible Role

The Kent Hounds requires a hunt groom to start asap. This is a flexible role that primarily involves the day-to-day care and exercise of approximately 4 hunt horses at our kennels in Elham, Kent.

This would suit a confident groom and rider looking to work a few hours a day on a part-time basis throughout the season. Averaging about 4 hours per day for six days each week, the role includes daily mucking out and general yard duties such as turning out, feeding, tack cleaning etc, as well as riding out/exercising. Prior to a hunting day, you will need to bath 1-2 hunt horses and on the morning of a hunting day, ensure that they are clean, clipped, plaited and tacked-up to a high-standard of turnout. At the end of a hunting day, you will need to ensure that the horses are checked over, bandaged, fed and bedded-down.

From May to July the horses will generally be turned away - duties during this period will be very minimal, save for some yard maintenance and some events which we parade at. Horses will be slowly brought back into work in July whilst living out, before the season starts at the beginning of September.

If desired, there is also scope for this role to include whipping-in on hunting days (2-3 days a week during the season).

If required, on-site accommodation is available until 1st May and can be reviewed thereafter.

We have a great team and a friendly, sociable working environment. You will need to be able to work using your own initiative and will be responsible for the horses in your care in all respects, from feeding and grooming to organising the farrier and vaccinations.

As such, we need a capable, dependable, reliable and organised individual that has good experience with horses, who can plait and clip and is not shy of some very early morning starts.

  • Salary - Good rate of pay
  • Driving Licence & Own Transport - Not essential, but preferred.
  • Accommodation on site - Available if required.
